Rent a car with our office in Merida, choose pickup at the airport or downtown, and plan a route that fits your days. Every rental includes third-party liability insurance, unlimited mileage and 24/7 assistance.

Three Yucatán routes you can drive from Merida

1. Ruins and haciendas: Uxmal and the Ruta Puuc (one day)

Drive south to Uxmal, about 1 hour 15 minutes from the city, and continue along the Ruta Puuc to Kabah, Sayil, Xlapak and Labná. These sites are far apart and have no regular public transport, so having your own car is what makes the loop possible in a single day. Start early, take water and cash for entrance fees, and be back on the main road before sunset.

2. Yellow town and Chichén Itzá (one long day)

Izamal, about an hour east, is worth a morning walk around its convent and yellow streets. From there continue to Chichén Itzá and, if you still have energy, to Valladolid and the Ek Balam ruins. You can return on the 180D toll road or take the free highway to see more villages along the way.

3. Gulf coast: Celestún, Progreso and Sisal (one or two days)

Celestún is about an hour and a half west: flamingos and mangrove boat trips, best early in the morning. Progreso is the nearest beach, around 40 minutes north, with a long boardwalk and fresh-fish restaurants. Combine it with a visit to the old port of Sisal if you want quieter water.

Cenotes near Merida

The area of Homún and Cuzamá, around an hour from the city, has dozens of cenotes reached by short dirt roads. Bring a swimsuit, a towel, small bills for entrance and parking, and book a vehicle with a bit of clearance if it rains. For sites such as Dzibilchaltún, closer to town, a standard car is enough.

Choosing your car

  • Compact or midsize: comfortable for couples, great mileage and good air conditioning for the heat.
  • Full size or SUV: best for four or more people with luggage and for the dirt tracks to cenotes.
  • Minivan: for larger groups traveling together.

Prices change by season and category, and the total with taxes appears before you pay, with no hidden fees.

Where you collect the car

  • Airport (MID): free shuttle from the meeting point to our office.
  • Downtown office: Calle 60 #484, Parque Santa Lucía, open daily 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
  • Hotel pickup: available for an additional fee.

Driving tips for the Yucatán

  • Fill the tank before long rural stretches; stations are fewer on the Ruta Puuc.
  • Expect speed bumps (topes) at the entrance of every village, even on main roads.
  • Avoid driving after dark outside the city: roads are unlit and animals cross.
  • Toll roads accept cash in pesos; keep small bills.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an SUV to visit the cenotes and ruins?

No for the ruins; they are on paved roads. An SUV only helps on the dirt tracks to some cenotes.

Can I drive from Merida to Cancun and return the car there?

Yes. A fixed one-way fee applies by category and is shown before you book. The trip is about 300 km on the 180D toll road.

What documents are needed?

Driver's license, passport or official ID, and a credit card in the driver's name for the deposit.

Is it safe to drive in the Yucatán?

Main roads and toll highways are in good condition. Drive in daylight, respect speed bumps and keep valuables out of sight when parked.
